Bismarck - a man of many faces
Bismarck is remembered as the "Iron Chancellor" and shaped the fate of Prussia and that of the German Empire founded in 1871 like no other politician before him. A conservative revolutionary, Bismarck made his mark on the history of Europe in the second half of the 19th Century. He might have been an aggressor in his efforts to see Germany united, repressive in his dealings with Catholics and the workers' movements but he was also a social reformer. His laws for the creation of social insurance such as health insurance in 183, accident insurance in 1884 and a state pension in 1889 are the cornerstones of the modern state.
