Jessye Norman, born on August 15th, 1945 in Augusta, Georgia, is considered one of the world’s most successful opera singers of the present and receives five Grammys during her career. After her apprenticeship she made her debut in 1969 at the Deutsche Opera in Berlin as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”. In the following four years she is a permanent ensemble member of the Deutsche Opera. In 1974 she debuted as Aida at La Scala. This is followed by performances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, in Los Angeles, New York, Paris and at the Salzburg Festival.
Another focus of her repertoire are the songs of Romanticism, as well as spirituals and since the 1990s jazz. In Paris, she sings at the official celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, the Marseillaise. In 1996 she opened the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
