Iraq occupies Kuwait – the 2nd Gulf War begins
On August 8, 1990, Iraqi troops occupied Kuwait on Saddam Hussein’s orders. Based on the alleged affiliation of Kuwait to the Iraqi province of Basra, the emirate is annexed on August 8, 1990. Legitimized by a resolution of the United Nations Security Council, a coalition of 34 states begins Operation Desert Storm on January 16, 1991. The war ended on March 5, 1991 with a military defeat of Iraq and the restoration of state sovereignty to Kuwait. Saddam Hussein’s regime remained in power in Iraq until the 3rd Gulf War in 2003.
