August 2016: 100 years since the death of Umberto Boccioni
August 2016 marks 100 years since the death of Umberto Boccioni (Italian artist: 19 October 1882 – 17 August 1916):
As one of the principal figures of Italian Futurism, Umberto Boccioni wanted art to break from the Classical and Renaissance styles still dominant in Italy at the start of the 20th century.
Movement and dynamism were key elements for Boccioni and the other Futurists. Advanced technology in the field of transportation (such as ever faster cars and trains) allowed humankind to experience ever greater speeds. The Futurists attempted to capture movement in static images or sculptural objects.
