Photos by Gilles Mermet
Scientists and diplomats from 130 countries met at the UNESCO summit in May 2019 to make the first global assessment of ecosystems in more than 15 years.
The findings of the conference are based on an alarming report from IPBES 'Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity Science and Policy, which states that between 500,000 and 1 million species are threatened. We can already see today how insects disappear within a century, even though they are essential to our ecosystems.
The results of this conference to stop extinction of wildlife species is as important as the Paris Climate Agreement that came into effect in 2016.
This is an opportunity for us to show Gilles Mermet's beautiful photos of beetles and butterflies, most of which are in the collections of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle.
