Matera - European Capital of Culture 2019
The Sassi di Matera, the cave city, was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1993 and Matera will be the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
Already inhabited since the Neolithic Age, the Sassi is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
The cave dwellings were inhabited until the end of the 1950s, after which the quarter was neglected and became a forbidden zone until the beginning of the 1980s.
After reconstruction and regeneration, the Sassi are chic and a picturesque touristic attraction.
