Mao Zedong (1893 - 1976)
Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China, was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Born the son of a farmer in Hunan Province, Mao first worked as a teacher and journalist before founding the Communist Party of China in 1921 and dedicating the remainder of his life to the revolutionary cause. His policies and ideals helped shape modern China. Praised by some as the 'Red Sun' and feared by many as the "Red Tiger", Mao was a figure as contradictory as the land and times in which he lived.
