Astronomy and Astrology
As Seneca said, “there is no easy way from the earth to the stars”. Humanity has been gazing up into the night sky for centuries to further our understanding of the cosmos. Astronomy, the scientific study of stars and planets, is the oldest of the natural sciences, dating back to antiquity.

Astrology on the other hand uses the apparent positions of celestial objects as the basis for the prediction of future events. In pre-modern times, most cultures did not make a clear distinction between the two disciplines. Kings and other rulers employed court astrologers to aid them in their decision making, thereby funding astronomical research. University medical students were taught astrology as it was generally used in medical practice.

Only since the 18th century have they come to be regarded as completely separate disciplines, with astrology usually regarded as a “pseudo-science”.

We have a great wealth of beautiful astronomical and astrological images in our archive from various different countries and time periods, which we present to you here in our carefully curated selection.
