April 2019: 500 Years since the Birth of Catherine de' Medici
April 2019 marks 500 years since the birth of Catherine de' Medici (queen consort of Henry II of France & subsequently regent of France; 13 April 1519 - 5 January 1589):
Born to an influential Italian family, Catherine de' Medici moved to France at the young age of fourteen to marry Henri de Valois, who (following the death of his elder brother) became king of France as Henry II. After the passing of her husband and her two eldest sons, Catherine de' Medici became Queen Regent for her ten-year old son Charles IX and later for her third son Henry III.
