The House of Romanov ruled Russia from 1613 until the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II on 15 March 1917, as a result of the February Revolution.
In the 18th century, Russia, the "giant empire in the east", had risen to become a major European power under the leadership of the Romanov dynasty.
