2nd February 2023: 80 years since the surrender of the 6th German army in Stalingrad.
World War II, Battle of Stalingrad, 23 August 19422 - 2nd February 1943, during which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Southern Russia.
Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus (1890 – 1957) was the German general who commanded the 6th German Army, which fought in Stalingrad. The battle ended in disaster for Nazi Germany when Soviet forces encircled and defeated about 265,000 personnel of the Wehrmacht. Of the 107,000 servicemen captured, only 6,000 survived captivity and returned home by 1955.
