Mit seinem viel zitierten Gemälde "Der Nachtmahr" aus dem Jahr 1790 schuf der Schweizer Künstler das Sinnbild der schwarzen Romantik. In seiner Malerei thematisiert Füssli Träume und Visionen. Häufig nimmt der Künstler Bezug auf Erzählungen von Homer, Dante, John Milton, Shakespeare und dem Nibelungenlied.
