The gold class was instituted on 8 July 1944 and only produced in very small numbers. No bestowals are known to have occurred. This example comes from the awards hoard hidden by the Orders Chancellery at Kleßheim Castle near Salzburg, which was subsequently looted at war's end by American forces.
